Influences of micro-geomorphology on the stoichiometry of C, N and P in Chenier Island soils and plants in the Yellow River Delta, China

Studies have indicated that consistent or well-constrained (relatively low variability) carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) ratios exist in large-scale ecosystems, including both marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Little is known about the C, N and P stoichiometric ratios that exist in the soils and plants of Chenier Island in the Yellow River Delta (YRD). We examined the distribution patterns a...

Unintended Consequences of Urbanization for Aquatic Ecosystems: A Case Study from the Arizona Desert

H and geomorphology are important determinants of the structure and function of fluvial ecosystems. Streamflow quantity and timing are often viewed as “master variables” limiting the distribution and abundance of riverine species (Poff et al. 1997) and the flux of nutrients into streams (Grimm 1987, Welter et al. 2005). Geomorphic structure—particularly channel form—is known to influence commun...

Estimation of the Soil Heat Flux for Determination of Evapotranspiration in Ecosystems

This paper presents a method for the estimation of the soil heat flux that was used to determine the evapotranspiration in ecosystems. The great advantage of this approach is that there is the possibility to use this method for both daytime and nighttime as well as that the parameters are adaptively recalculated depending on three soil temperatures. It enables the estimation in situ of the soil...

Tree species diversity and its relationship to stand parameters and geomorphology features in the eastern Black Sea region forests of Turkey.

We studied the effects of stand parameters (crown closure, basal area, stand volume, age, mean stand diameter number of trees, and heterogeneity index) and geomorphology features (elevation, aspect and slope) on tree species diversity in an example of untreated natural mixed forest stands in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. Tree species diversity and basal area heterogeneity in forest ec...

Linkages Between Riparian Characteristics, Ungulate Grazing, and Geomorphology and Nutrient Cycling in Montane Grassland Streams

Catchment characteristics and disturbances control the conditions and processes found in stream ecosystems. We examined nutrient cycling linkages between riparian soils and adjacent streams and the impacts of the removal of ungulate grazing on these ecosystems and processes at six grazing exclosure sites in the Valles Caldera National Preserve, NM, USA. The exclusion of native and domestic ungu...

Marine Geomorphology in the Design of Marine Reserve Networks

Marine environments, key life-support systems for the earth, are under severe threat. Issues associated with managing these common property resources are complex and interrelated. Networks of marine reserves can be valuable for mitigating threats to marine systems, yet the successful design and implementation of such networks has been limited. Efficient ways to conserve marine environments are ...
